What a Sewer Camera Inspection Can and Cannot Show

A sewer camera is valuable because it lets a plumber visually inspect accessible pipe interiors. It is also easy to overstate what a camera can prove.

What the Camera Shows—and Its Limits

Access and visibility affect what an inspection can document. Compare the useful observations with what video alone cannot establish.

What It Can Help Show

Depending on visibility and access, a camera may document:

  • visible obstruction or buildup
  • intrusion into the pipe
  • displaced or damaged sections
  • standing water in the inspected segment
  • changes in pipe condition
  • the general location of visible concerns when paired with appropriate locating methods

What It Cannot Reliably Prove Alone

A camera does not automatically:

  • identify every leak
  • prove slope along the entire line
  • see through opaque standing water or heavy obstruction
  • inspect inaccessible branches
  • tell you the only correct repair option

When It May Be Useful

  • recurring drain backups
  • repeated cleaning at the same line
  • suspected sewer-lateral damage
  • post-cleaning condition review
  • planning a targeted repair

Why Findings Need Context

Video should be interpreted together with symptoms, access, cleaning history and other plumbing observations.
